Born in Paris, Dec 22, 1815 and died October 1, 1892. A pupil of Gros and L. Cogniet. First obtained notice and public acclaim with his painting "Triumph des Heliogabel" in 1841. Further fame was directed on him in 1850 with his "Verlesung der Letzen Opfer der Schrekennszeit". In 1864 Muller was elected a member of the Institut of France and later became the Director of the Gobelin Tapestries Council. Literature: J. Muller entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1831. He was the pupil of Gros and Leon Cogniet. In 1834, he first exhibited at the Paris Salon and continued as a regular contributor until his death.His work was characterized by extraordinary attention to details and lifelike characterizations, which resulted in ready acceptance by the art loving public of his day.Muller violated no traditions, broke no new paths, and violated none of the ancient traditions. Every conceivable honor was heaped upon Muller, a medal of the 3rd. class being awarded him in 1838; a medal of the second class in 1846; and finally a medal of the first class in 1848, duplicating this latter honor again in 1855. Muller was accorded the "Legion d'Honneur" in 1849, and in 1850 became an officer in that noted body. In 1864 the Institute appointed him a member,and in later years he became the Director of the manufacture of Gobelin tapestries.Works of Muller are exhibited in the following museums;-
